Indianapolis Elegant Teal + Silver Omni Severin Wedding // Brittany & Cody

“I’ve got you, I don’t need nothing, more than you. I got everything, I’ve got you.” // Jack Johnson

Oh my word, this day finally arrived. A wedding, a life, a friendship, and a love; nine years in the making that it’s hard to believe it’s finally here! Although the weather was cold, the wind was blowing, and things were crazy there was warmth and calming sense of love in the way Brittany and Cody embraced on their wedding day last weekend. With a touching ceremony at Zionsville Presbyterian Church and a gorgeous reception at The Omni Severin Hotel. I was thrilled to be photographing their big day and I had an absolute blast! After photographing their engagement session last year I knew we were going to have a wonderful time on their big day, and we did. So much so that it even exceeded my expectations. I was welcomed into their day and their family with open arms. By the end of the day, I almost felt like one of Brittany’s long lost cousins! But the best part about the whole day was was watching two high school sweethearts commit themselves to one another and taking the first step of many to the rest of their lives together!

Pendleton Falls Park Family Session // Huse Family

“Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite.”

These people are some of my favorite people ever. I love all of my clients but these people aren’t just clients, they aren’t just friends, and they aren’t really family. They’re assumed family. I don’t have any first cousins in my family. I know, it’s crazy but neither of my parents’ only siblings ever had any kids. So I grew up cousin-less. I had some second cousins here and there but they were all in different states and countries and I just didn’t get to have those experiences with them like most people have with their cousins. One day while looking on Facebook I noticed that with all of the Huse brothers, their wives, plus Connie and Andy, I am friends on Facebook with more Huses than I am Huffs (my maiden name). I told this to Ashley and jokingly said, “You guys are kind of like the cousins I never had!” So part friends, part family; this group is a group of some of my most favorite people.

Normally I don’t do big family sessions. I usually max out around five to six people, and that’s only if they have a lot of kids. But when Connie contacted me to photograph her family it was because she recently found out her youngest son, who had been living in California after enlisting in the Marine Corps, was about to be deployed. He got one trip back home before he was deployed and Connie realized they hadn’t had photos done in several years. So many so, her middle son’s wife wasn’t even part of them! Of course I was happy to document the Huse family. I knew it was going to be a challenge because when you put all three Huse brothers together in a room it usually means ridiculous and inappropriate things are going to happen. It also means taking their photos when its cold, wet, and windy is even more difficult. But we made it through and I am happy to have photographed them before the youngest Huse boy was deployed.

Magical Spring Wildflower Sunset Engagement Session // Cara & Aaron

“After all this time?” “Always” // Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

There’s something to be said for couples who have stuck it out together and been together for quite some time before getting engaged. I can’t speak much on the subject because my husband and I are crazy people and got engaged only five months into dating and then married on our first anniversary. But I always admire couples who have put in three, five, ten years into their relationship before deciding to tie the knot. It shows beautiful dedication to one another that prepares each other for a lifelong commitment.

Cara and Aaron have loved each other for over five years and have known each other since 2006! They met through a mutual friend in high school and started becoming close friends during their senior year and freshman year of college. They felt the connection but with Aaron moving to IU Bloomington and Cara still at IUPUI in Indianapolis the timing just wasn’t right. Finally when the timing was right during their junior year they decided the distance was worth it and started dating and making the trip... or more, trips... to see each other weekly.

After graduation they spent many more years together until Aaron decided to plan the perfect holiday engagement while visiting Cara’s family in her hometown of Augusta, Georgia. Aaron knew of Cara’s obsession with her hometown and knew that this was the perfect place for a proposal. After getting permission from both of Cara’s moms they decided to take a stroll down memory lane visiting all of Cara’s favorite spots. Walking down the Riverwalk Canal along the Savannah River Aaron decided it was the perfect place to pop the question. And after all this time, he got down on one knee and asked her. According to Cara, “It was perfect.”

The two were absolutely amazing rockstars during their engagement session! I’ve known Cara for years since we worked together at Panera way back in 2007! And although I won’t be photographing their wedding I was absolutely thrilled to photograph their engagement session! We had a stellar sunset and gorgeous weather! Which is great because it was a reschedule from a rainy date and I’m so glad we rescheduled because it turned out absolutely perfect!

Lookout Mountain Wine + Whiskey Inspired Wedding // Rashel & Michael

“I say Georgia, Georgia. A song of you, comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines.” // Ray Charles

Rashel and Michael’s wedding day in October 2015 at a family farm and The Grandview amongst beautiful Lookout Mountain in Georgia was a day that could be stopped by nothing. It was a day filled with love, friends, family, wine, whiskey, dancing, and laughter. It was also a day that started with rain and had a few bumps along the way. But at the end of the day these two amazing people committed themselves to one another in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the base of Lookout Mountain and then danced the night away at a gorgeous patio reception in clouds. I am absolutely thrilled to be sharing these photos with you guys. This was definitely a wedding I will never forget and I am so grateful to Rashel and Michael that they asked me to join them on their most special day.

Rashel and Michael met in 2007 through mutual friends during Purdue University’s freshman orientation program. Although they just started as friends the two of them eventually developed a connection that neither of them could deny. (Even though they tried for awhile!) In November 2008 they decided to make it official and they’ve been inseparable since. Fast forward to Christmas of 2013 when Michael insisted they take a trip to Chicago for the holidays. While it wasn’t unusual Rashel, being Rashel, tried to resist saying they needed to focus on others for the holidays. Michael booked the hotel anyways and they made the trip. While dining in the same restaurant they had dined in five years before Michael presented her with a box and under layers of tissue paper there was an iPad. Filled with pictures and text of friends and family the final picture was of their sweet pup Cinna with a sign asking her Mommy to marry Daddy. Obviously, Rashel said “yes” and now we’re here. In beautiful Georgia watching the two of them tie the knot. Like I said, it’s a day for the history books.

Downtown Indianapolis Engagement Session // Elizabeth & Kevin

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well.” // Virginia Woolf

Back in January I participated in the Indianapolis Bride Expo bridal show. It was a fun two days of meeting amazing brides who were so excited to plan their special day. As with any bridal show I run a raffle for a complimentary engagement session! When I pulled names out of the proverbial hat, Elizabeth + Kevin were the lucky winners and I’m so glad they were! A couple weeks ago I had the very distinct pleasure of spending a Saturday with them to not only photograph and document their love but I also was able to learn more about who they are as a couple.

During our time together I learned so many things. I learned that they met through mutual friends, but ultimately on the dance floor. ;) I learned that their first date was at The Wellington Pub in Broad Ripple. That Elizabeth celebrated her birthday at Bluebeard while Kevin celebrated his at Bakersfield. I learned that while Kevin is a little more picky when it comes to food, Elizabeth’s foodie heart has opened him up to new things. I learned that they love trying new restaurants and that apparently The Eagle and Ball and Biscuit on Mass Ave are DEFINITELY worth a try. I learned she was a school teacher and he a tennis coach. They love to travel, drink wine, and spend nights outside at home with their adorable pup Flynn. This is why I love what I do. Before walking into their engagement session I knew nothing about them but two names and a wedding date. Now I know so much more and I feel like I made friends with some incredible people. And I think our tour d’Indianapolis engagement session was better because of it.

Downtown Indianapolis Regions Tower Fall Wedding // Lindsey & Dave

“Tell me that you want me, and I’ll be yours completely, for better or for worse.” // Kodaline

My oh my, oh my, oh my! This wedding ladies and gentleman. This wedding is definitely up there in like top five favorite weddings from last year. Not to say anything bad AT ALL about my other weddings from 2015. I love each and every one of my clients. They are all amazing and beautiful people committing themselves to each other for life. That in itself is the reason why I do what I do. To tell love stories. But when you have a super fun loving couple paired with an equally fun wedding party, more time for photos than I’ve ever known what to do with, delicious food, heart warming toasts, a sunset, AND a beautiful rainbow come together into one amazing wedding. Well it’s every photographers dream.

Lindsey + Dave are possibly some of the sweetest people I’ve ever met! One of my favorite things is when my clients become my friends and I feel like Lindsey and I are sisters from another mister! (P.S. She sends the best snapchats of usually one of three things: her/her & Dave at a sporting event, her super sweet pup, or whatever alcoholic drink she is enjoying at that time. Needless to say, I love her and her snaps.) But I digress... Lindsey and Dave tied the knot on what appeared to be a cold, windy, overcast day in our beautiful capital city Indianapolis. On the fifth floor of the Region’s Tower they exchanged vows, shed tears, danced, laughed, and had the best of times celebrating their nuptials. By the end of their ceremony we thought we weren’t going to have much more than some orangey clouds in the distance for a sunset. But low and behold the clouds cleared and not only did we have an exquisite sunset but a rainbow! A flippin’ rainbow y’all. It was great. Aside from all of the amazing things any photographer would dream of having on a wedding day, I was absolutely honored to be there and witness and document their memories. I feel lucky to have met and been chosen by them and working with them has truly reminded me of why I love what I do.

Indiana University Bloomington Spring Engagement Session // Miranda & Jordan

“Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi’s life. So you might say, that we are encouraged to love.” // Anakin Skywalker

This year’s engagement season has definitely been off to a good start! This Spring has been FULL of engagement sessions and I’ve been having an absolute ball! And the weather has actually been pretty dang good to us! And there was no exception for this Star Wars lovin’, Cream & Crimson wearin’, super fun, Hoo-hoo-HOOSIER alum couple! We had beautiful weather, a gorgeous sunset, and one wicked stunning campus to capture their love on! It was Little 5 weekend but we did not let that stop us! Miranda + Jordan rocked out some amazing photographs on the IU Bloomington campus that made even this BSU Cardinal root for the Crimson squad!

Although Miranda + Jordan are both IU Alumni they did not meet while attending school there! With an enrollment of over 40,000 students it’s no wonder they didn’t meet! While they didn’t meet on campus they did meet over some beers at The Ale Emporium in Indianapolis in 2014 watching an IU Basketball game. Miranda is an admitted huge IU Basketball fan stating that she decided in fourth grade she would attend IU based on this love. Luckily she got in because she applied no where else! Bonding over their mutual love of their alma mater Miranda and Jordan turned a losing basketball game into a winning love for them.

It was so much fun to spend time getting to know them during our session walking around the beautiful southern Indiana campus. We discovered that Jordan and I are BASICALLY the same person (Fruit punch Gatorade for the win!) and that they are one heckuva fun couple to be around!

Anderson Intimate & Rustic Barn at Hawks Point Wedding // Kerri & Jonny

Cowboy Boots, Teal, Maroon, & Owls...

You betchya. All those things fit beautifully together one Sunday afternoon for Kerri + Jonny’s wedding at The Barn at Hawks Point in Anderson, IN. The duo traded their handwritten vows in an intimate ceremony at the barn’s beautiful outdoor ceremony space. It was a wonderfully fun day that I was so incredibly honored to document for my past college “hallway mate” aka “wingman.” Kerri and I go way back even before college having a mutual friend from childhood. But it was in college at Ball State University where we lived across the hall from each other that we truly bonded. Even after many fun times going to dorm sponsored black light parties and “studying” in the study lounge I never would have though back then I would be photographing her wedding! It was so wonderful to get to know Jonny and see her family again through this process!

Kerri + Jonny’s wedding was a fun mix of Kerri’s bold personality mixed with Jonny’s flair for the rustic. Complete with bright teal and lovely maroon, her love of owls, his love of feathers, sports team loves, cowboy boots, and wood slices. Their wedding was just full of personal touches. And I was so glad to be there to document it!

Bull Creek District Park Portrait Session // Austin Minis

“There is a freedom you begin to feel the closer you get to Austin, Texas.” // Willie Nelson

As most of you know I recently I was fortunate enough to photograph a wedding out in Austin, Texas. And as a first time traveler to Austin I was both terrified and in love with the city. While Austin is downright beautiful this midwestern girl struggled a bit traveling on the highways in Texas. Needless to say, there are a lot of overpasses and they can get quite scary! Sorry Austin peoples... these are just the facts.

However, traveling on these terrifying roads led to a lot of fun and amazing things though. Like my first time trying In-N-Out Burger, making amazing new friends, and catching up with some awesome people for my Austin Mini Sessions!

In June 2014 I second shot a wedding with Conforti Photography where I met Leslie + Amanda. Two amazingly beautiful women with equally beautiful souls! When Leslie saw I was going to being ATX she definitely wanted to book a mini session! And then Leslie told the woman she nannies for about the sessions and she booked too!! It was definitely fun catching up with Leslie + Amanda again and then meeting Leigh + Robin and their adorable little kiddos!

Intimate & Rustic DIY Hill Country Texas Wedding // Andrea & Andy

“You've got that kind of look in your eyes, as if no one knows anything but us...” // Ed Sheeran

Let me just tell you guys, I am so ridiculously excited to share this wedding with you! What a way to kick off my wedding season with a beautiful outdoor wedding at The Wildflower Barn in Driftwood, TX! I’m telling you guys, this intimate wedding was full of so much love and fun that I don’t even know where to start with this blog post! I’m going to preface this that it may be a long post. I just walked away with so many images that I loved it was hard to pare down!

Let’s start off with their story shall we? Andrea + Andy have been together for quite a long time! In fact they’ve known each other for 10 years! They met way back in sophomore year of high school in Spanish class at Noblesville High School. It was in this class Andy had decided he enjoyed sleeping more than learning Spanish. Since they were seated next to each other Andy would copy off of Andrea a lot and frequently ask for help. Once the teacher caught on to them they figured FOR SURE they would be separated or failed. Neither happened. Instead, the teacher decided to have them continue to sit next to each other for the rest of the year. Needless to say they were dating before the end of the school year. They separated for awhile when Andrea moving to Colorado for three years and then a lot of other things got in their way. But they managed to find their way back to each other for Andy to propose to Andrea on the River Walk on Marriage Island in San Antonio. Surrounded by family and even a tour boat cheering them on Andrea said “yes” that day on the little island said to bring long and loving marriages for those who are wed or engaged there.

I can’t see into the future (although that would be a cool talent to have) but from spending the time I spent with Andrea + Andy last week I can tell you superstition or not I believe they will have a long and loving marriage. They work well with each other to solve problems and take care of each other. It’s obvious they care deeply for each other and their personalities mesh so well. They are amazing people and their wedding was equally amazing. I’m so excited to share with you their pink and pewter, blue bonnet surrounded, laughter filled, fun having, DIY, rustic, wedding amazingness. I hope you’re ready because the cuteness starts now!

Downtown Indianapolis Engagement Session // Heather & Obi

A little bit of love in little ol' Indy...

Indianapolis is one of my favorite cities. I may be a little biased since I live here but I just love it. New York is cool. And Chicago is great. But Indianapolis is one of my favorites. I love that it’s easy to walk everywhere. If I want to do a photo shoot in three different locations in Indianapolis it’s no big deal. We can easily get to three different locales in a 2 hour time period and still have time to take some wicked awesome photos. And that’s what we did with Heather + Obi for their engagement session! We had so much fun trekking around Downtown Indy it was amazing how fast the sun was gone and the session was over! But we definitely had a blast! We started the engagement session off on the patio of Capital Grille, one of their favorite restaurants, sharing laughter, smiles, and love over a glass of wine.

Noblesville Potter's Bridge Sunset Engagement Session // Andrea & Andy

Adorable puppies and a beautiful sun drenched couple in love...

First of all, I’m going to start this blog post with if you have your dogs included in your engagement session your session will 100x cuter. You can’t argue with this. These are real statistics. Because dogs. And because... science. Yeah.

Secondly, if you know anything about me by now, you know that I am #OBSESSED with sunset light and a beautiful sun drenched engagement session in the middle of a field. I love urban engagement sessions. Love, love, love, them but there’s just something about an open field draped in the warm glow of a Midwestern sunset that just says “home” to me. Call it the Hoosier in me. Call it the Heartland. But it’s sunsets and sessions like this that make my little photographer heart go a pitter patter.

So now that I’ve gone on and on about how much I love Indiana let’s talk about how much I love this couple. This engagement session from last November was a bit... impromptu... I guess you could say. Andrea + Andy were in the wedding party for a wedding I shot in Georgia for Rashel + Michael (who I haven’t blogged yet... whoops). After photographing that wedding Andrea + Andy invited me out Austin, TX to photograph their wedding as well. Which is where I am right now because their wedding is TOMORROW! I wanted to make sure for today’s Portrait Session Friday post I wrote about Andrea + Andy’s engagement session before they tie the knot tomorrow!

Indianapolis Geeks In Love Gaming Convention Wedding // Lisa & Dave

“What Does That Make Us?” “Big Damn Lovebirds, Sir.” “Ain’t We Just?” // Firefly (modified)

What happens when you put two big damn lovebirds (tee hee), an engagement session, elephants, a gaming convention, a LARP, and a wedding all in one weekend? You get a big damn blog post of the whole shindig!

Lisa + Dave chose to wed surrounded by all of their friends and family at the local FREE gaming convention Whosyer Con at the Wyndham Indianapolis West. It’s only fitting since the two of them met in convention scene. These two have some of the biggest hearts I’ve ever seen. They volunteer their time and work incredibly hard at several conventions every year in order to support their friends, chosen family, and the fandoms they love so much. It’s no wonder that there wasn’t an empty seat in the house at their ceremony, there were even people even standing in the back just to watch them tie the knot! So buckle your seat belts kids and hold on for the ride because this blog post is going to be a long one but I promise it will be full of happiness and two people crazy in love surrounded by amazing friends and family!

Indianapolis Mass Ave Engagement Session // Sara & Paul

Our great city, exposed brick walls, and one shimmery pink dress...

A couple weekends ago I had the distinct pleasure of kicking off my 2016 engagement season with this fun and amazing couple! We went downtown and hung around the War Memorial and Mass Ave while taking some super sweet engagement photos! There was a chill in the air but we didn’t let it dampen our spirits. We pushed forward and had a blast with some amazing sunset light and an adorable couple snugglin’ it up.

Ever since a long night out the day after Thanksgiving in 2005, these two have been inseparable. They met on the dance floor at Indy’s own Ike and Jonesy’s bar and you can tell they still have that amazing spark they saw when first danced the night away. The two live together with their sweet cats and enjoy traveling, nights at Cancun restaurant, and watching all of the tv shows they can stream! They were definitely so much fun to spend a Friday evening with! They even let me talk their ear off at a burger joint called B Spot! (Totally legit by the way, rosemary fries for the win!) But their engagement photos were the real winner of the evening!

Brown County State Park Engagement Session // Sarah & Steffan

Fall leaves, beautiful scenery, and the cutest little tomato skirt you’ve ever seen!

I knew right away that when I booked Sarah + Steffan’s engagement session last September that Sarah was going to be dressed in just the cutest little outfits! Considering that she runs a fashion blog and Instagram called Indy Dressed it was definitely likely that she was going to look super fabulous! (And you should definitely check her out and follow her!) So when she was texting me pictures of this adorable little tomato skirt I was super excited! I love it when my clients text me their engagement session outfits! It opens the conversation about what to wear for photos and helps put them at ease with the ever stressful question of, “What the heck are we going to wear!?”

Sarah + Steffan met at Ball State in 2010 right after Sarah returned from studying abroad in Japan. Everyone assumes that because of their mutual love of Japanese culture they would have met in a Japanese class! Due to a scheduling snafu, however, they actually met in a Communications class! It was meant to be because about five years later we met in the beautiful scenery of Brown County, IN to photograph their fun and quirky love for their engagement photos. They were so fun and so adventurous hiking through some crazy trails to get to some sweet photo spots!

Cicero Bright & Fun Backyard Wedding // Mackenzie & Casey

"Nothing can bring a real sense of security into a home except true love." // Billy Graham

My most favorite thing about Mackenzie and Casey's wedding is it started at home. Held on Mackenzie's parents property, where the couple spent a lot of their time. The couple exchanged vows on the bride's parents' front porch surrounded by 200 of their closest family and friends. Yes, two. hundred. Trust me, if you knew this amazing couple, you would understand why 200 people would want to see them tie the knot. They're the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met.

After their ceremony everyone joined for a tented reception in the backyard with food, music and dancing. It was definitely a fun time!

Indiana Waterfall Couples Session // Kelsey & Seth

Waterfalls, a flower crown, ankle boots, and a flowy maroon dress...

These are all the makings of a downright perfect portrait session for me! First, if you guys know anything about me I’m all for flower crowns. I love them. They're wonderful. They make everything feel more beautiful and elegant. They’re the best. One of my favorite parts about working with Kelsey is she asks me my opinion on attire, locations, and style for her sessions. She totally gets it and loves to make a super unique portrait session. When Kelsey and I first started talking about her portrait session with her boyfriend Seth we knew we wanted to do something a little different than we had done before. This time we decided to go for a waterfall. Believe it or not there are waterfalls in Indiana! Yeah! I’m just as shocked as you guys are!

So we traveled down to Cloverdale, IN to Lieber State Recreation Area to photograph this awesome duo at Cataract Falls. It was such a cool place! I highly recommend anyone to visit there! I want to do another session there but I do have one tip for anyone doing another session there. Account for travel time! Not just TO the location but WITHIN the location! Since I do all of my portrait sessions at sunset we were playing beat the clock with sundown! When I scheduled the time for their session I didn’t account for the fact that it takes forever to get to all of these cool falls. Lots of hiking and climbing to get down to where the falls are! So by the time we got down to this cool location, the sun was almost gone. Plus you’re down low and it’s innately more dark there. So I really had to push my ISO to make the photos work in such low light situations. So keep that in mind!

ALSO! Today is their two year anniversary! Which is actually a total coincidence that I just found out before I aired this post!

Now, onward with their amazing photos!

Indianapolis Intimate Woodland Literary Wedding // Lindsey & Eric

“Love, it’s not an emotion. Love is a promise.” // The 12th Doctor: Doctor Who

When your bride quotes Doctor Who in her wedding vows you know she’s the right bride for you. It doesn't hurt that Lindsey + Eric are also close friends of mine and my husband. My husband has known Eric since high school and I’ve known him since my husband and I started dating seven years ago. Of course when Eric started bringing Lindsey around we all immediately loved her. Because she’s just like us. So it was no surprise when Eric and Lindsey announced they were going to get married that they asked my husband and I to stand with them. But then what Lindsey said next changed everything:

“You can still photograph my wedding and be a bridesmaid right?”

And of course I said:

“YEP!”

So let me preface this blog post by saying it’s gonna be a long one. I was so involved in the wedding it was hard not to tell every aspect of the day in this post. But if you can bear with me I promise it will be worth it! It was a crazy day of playing bridesmaid, wedding planner/designer, and photographer. But with the help of Joni Bilderback the day was pulled off with tons of fun and capturing their relationship just as it is. No frills. No excess. Just two people committing themselves to one another surrounded by family and friends in an intimate outdoor ceremony and reception followed by drinks, music, a bonfire, and camping.

State Fair Mini Sessions // 2015

Sunsets, ferris wheels, & elephant ears... OH MY!

All of the most amazing things can always be found every summer at The Indiana State Fair. While you may be able to find those things somewhere else, to me, nothing compares to the fair. I remember as a kid always being super excited to go to the State Fair with my grandma. Every time I go back I get this warm sense of feeling like I'm at home. So it was only logical that when I held summer mini sessions they would be at the State Fair. I loved it so much that I can't wait to offer them again this year!!

Intimate Backyard Labor Day Wedding // Kelly & Mel

“Whatever our souls are made up, his and mine are the same.” // Emily Bronte

I love this quote by Emily Bronte, I feel like it really describes Kelly + Mel’s relationship. Two ladies who have always been on the same wavelength. Three years ago, Kelly asked me to photograph a ceremony between her and her partner Mel at their home in Fishers over Labor Day weekend. At the time, same-sex marriage was not only not legal in Indiana but not part of our foreseeable future. Kelly + Mel didn’t know when or IF same-sex marriage would become legal in the state where they reside but they did know they were raising two amazing twin boys and they wanted those boys to feel their family come together. Three years ago Kelly + Mel proclaimed their love and promises to take care of each other in an intimate ceremony for close friends and family. I was honored to photograph their union then, but I was even more honored when Kelly invited me back to photograph their legal ceremony this past Labor Day at their annual Labor Day party. It was a fun filled evening with live music by Zanna Doo, catering by Simeri’s Italian Restaurant, swimming and dancing all around. I was so happy to be there surrounded by their love and zest for life. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend my Labor Day weekend!
